Photographic Exhibition by Julio Etchart

Uruguayan photo journalist Julio Etchart specializes in cultural, political and
environmental issues. On his many visits to Cuba, he followed established
Santeros on their visits to the faithful to capture the charged atmosphere of the
sessions, with people falling in trance and being possessed by the spirits of dead
relatives and beloved ones. When slaves were brought from Africa to the
Americas to work in the plantations during the colonial period, the only piece of
luggage that survived the terrible journey was their native religion. It was this
that gave them the strength to endure the harsh conditions of forced labour.
This tradition is very much alive in present Cuba, and Etchart's work captures
the spirit of that faith.

Visible or invisible? Black Peruvians in the imagined Peruvian
Peru is often said to be a nation where race does not matter; everyone, so goes
the popular Peruvian saying, is equally 'mixed': Spanish, Indian, and Black.
While their contributions to music, dance and sports are aknowledged, Black
Peruvians today remain largely invisible in the public sphere and marginal to the
debates about the future of Peruvian society. This lecture outlines some of the
difficulites in studying the experience of Black Peruvians today asn sketches out
some of the challenges to the prevalent representation of Peru as a raceless
nation.
